2010-08-16 Dry Mills Schoolhouse Committee Minutes
Dry Mills Schoolhouse Committee Meeting Minutes

   August 16, 2010

Present: Acting Committee Chairperson Charlena Walker, acting Committee Secretary Christina Kuchinski, committee member Audrey Burns, Council Liaison Mark Grover and special guest Deb Mancini. Meeting was called to order at 6:35 PM.

Minutes from meeting held on July 19, 2010 were read and approved. Correction to minutes: attic ventilation should read instead floor ventilation.

Charlena Walker spoke with Kathleen Wood. Kathleen will not be able to be a member of the committee due to a busy home life and working at 2 jobs. We would like to thank Kathleen for her past participation and will miss her input. We are now down to 4 members and need to recruit some interested candidates to fill the committee roles and help with the preservation of the schoolhouse.

Mark Grover reported that he presented his notes at the council regarding the need for funding to get the schoolhouse repaired. The council were sympathetic to our cause and agreed that if there were left over money from this past budget year that perhaps some of it could be applied toward the cost of having the school house repaired. The next council meeting will be on September 7, with the Town Manager,  during which time they will approve any transfers of money.

Doug Webster is still of the opinion that the repairs to the roof, to maintain its integrity, are still very important. We as a committee want to do what we think is important in regard to building safety, so that we can open the building back up to the public in the spring.

Charlena called Ryan Keith on Friday. He had already walked the site with Bob Hudson from Windham Correctional. Bob stated that he and the inmates could repair the floor in September. Ryan Keith will order supplies and have them on site for work to begin. Ryan mentioned again that the floor will be repaired first. After we know how much it costs to repair the floor we can then decide on roof repairs in the spring.

Charlena mentioned that we should send an invitation to the town council asking them to visit the schoolhouse if they can find the time, before repairs begin. Audrey made a motion that we send an invitation to the council and it was approved favorably by the committee.

Charlena mentioned that the puttying of the school house windows is on the building department’s list of items to be repaired in the public buildings.

Next meeting will be held on Monday September 20th at 6:30 PM at the new town hall. Mark will find out if we can meet there and get put on the docket for monthly meetings.

Meeting Adjourned at 6:55 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Christina Kuchinski

Acting Secretary
