Meeting Notes for Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Present:  Jeanne Carpentier, Tom Delaney, Edward Libby, Lance Tulmac, Don Hutchings, and Tracy Scheckel Council Liaison

Absent:  Jack Goosetrey, Lou Mancini

Meeting called to order by Jeanne Carpentier committee chair

This special meeting was called to discuss the projects for 2009 in preparation for a meeting with the Town Council on Tuesday, January 20 to present the goals.  This meeting replaces the regularly scheduled meeting for Wednesday, January 21.

Discussion took place regarding the summary presented by George Thebarge since the last meeting organizing our goals into four categories.  They are as follows:

A. Organizational Capacity for Economic Development
Town web site
Gray/New Gloucester Business Association
Economic Development Corporation
B. Distressed or Underutilized Properties
MDOT lot on Turnpike Acres Road
Copp Motors
Shell Station
Pennell Laboratory
C. Zoning of Land
Land for business development
Land along the Bypass
D. Transportation
Village ring road

After much discussion of where we could have the most positive impact, keeping in mind the comprehensive plan goals for economic development, it was decided to focus our overall efforts on improving the marketing of our town.  We will accomplish this by creating a CEDC website or page that will be linked to the town’s web site and work with the town to improve the current website.  We will develop a solid relationship with the Gray/New Gloucester Business Association.  We will continue to work with existing businesses in Gray, in particular focusing on distressed or underutilized properties.  Finally, we will ask the council if there is a function within zoning where we may have a positive impact.

We wish to emphasize to the town to encourage a prompt, courteous and enthusiastic response to all inquiries so the overall experience is a positive one for any potential business developer.

Tracy brought up some information regarding a transportation alternative through GPCOG that we may be able to find out more information about as an option under transportation.

Presentation to the council will take place on Tuesday, January 20 at 7:00 pm at Stimson Hall.  Our next regularly scheduled meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Stimson Hall at 6:30 pm.

Meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm

Respectfully submitted, Jeanne Carpentier, Chair
