2011-02-10 Recreation Commission Minutes
Recreation and Conservation Committee Meeting
6:30 PM  -  February 10, 2011
Henry Pennell Municipal Complex

MEETING MINUTES

In attendance was committee member Jeff Gilpatric, special guests included Deb Nickerson and Tracy Scheckel. Committee member Aaron Chandler showed up later as did Dana Welch who is considering becoming a member.

We opened up with a review of the 20011-12 municipal budget, capital improvements and Enterprise accounts.

Jeff questioned the amount of money budgeted for the copy machine.

Dean then explained where the recreation department is in regard to the scholarship accounts. Currently we have money sitting in the Josh Libby Scholarship account for individuals applying for summer day camp help. The funds for this account derive from the annual kickball tournament.

The general recreation scholarship account has no money presently in it. This account covers individuals that maybe needing assistance for youth sports, camps & clinic and vacation camps. The intent is to solicit local businesses to buy ads in the seasonal brochures and use that money for the scholarships. That hasn’t happened yet. Because our brochure is in collaboration with the school department, that prohibits us from utilizing businesses as a means of revenue.

We have also discussed the possibility of one dollar from each activity registration to go into that fund. The committee seemed very interested in that idea. Dean is to follow up with the town manager and finance director to see if this is possible.

Dean mentioned that we will need at least two committee members to sit on this scholarship sub-committee.

Talked about Maine Municipal Association possibly helping out with policies for scholarship.

Many ideas for special events for fundraising were expressed.

Dean talked about the newly acquired property next to Pennell. The idea of keeping the property as “open space” for passive recreation came up. The concept of walking paths, sitting areas and possibly a few exercise stations was discussed. We all thought it was a good idea. It seems to be a good fit with the property and the overall expense is much more reasonable.

Next meeting: March 10th.  Dean is to come with some estimates for walking paths
