Solid Waste & Recycling Committee Minutes
January 11, 2006
There was a brief discussion regarding selling recycling bins and looking into compost bins. At the next meeting, we should be prepared to make final decisions and take actions regarding these projects. Here's a link to an organization I've been getting newsletter from: http://www.mrra.net/ . They have compost bins for sale.
We discussed the Gray Solid Waste & Flow Control ordinance and briefly reviewed the dumping ordinance from the Town of Limington. Copies of the Mandatory Recycling Ordinance from Cambridge, Mass. were distributed for review.
We discussed the possibility of introducing a mandatory recycling ordinance in Gray. The discussion probed two avenues. First, would a mandatory recycling ordinance directly further the goal of increasing the rate of recycling in Gray? Second, disregarding the goal of increasing the recycling rate, would a mandatory recycling ordinance provide a beneficial basis for defining and codifying a major thrust of Gray's solid waste handling policy?
It was decided that at our next meeting, we would make a decision regarding pursuing development of a mandatory recycling ordinance (MRO). If the committee decides a MRO is warranted, we will lay develop and argument and a rough outline of a MRO and present it to the town council for their review.
