Gray Solid Waste & Recycling Committee Meeting Minutes, March 9th.
Attendees: Jewel McHale, Margaret Hutchins, Randy Cookson, Peter Thoits
Proposal to re-name the committee: Mike Vadas did a web search of other recycling committee names. He reports there is not a lot of originality out there. Margaret will ask Tracy to post a request for committee name ideas on the town website. We will address this item at a future meeting.
Recycling education initiative ideas: Proposals include: A large sign over the trash hopper at the transfer station stating the cost per pound for waste sent to ecoMaine. A poster that can be displayed at the transfer station and other town and/or school buildings describing how much is recycled each year in Gray and the costs or paybacks associated. Approach the local Boy / Girl Scouts to invite them to participate in education projects. Approach the high school Environmental Studies class regarding a project. Develop a presentation that can be offered to local groups/schools. An Earth Day display. A "Maine Recycles Week" event in connection with the initiative sponsored by the Maine State Planning Office.
Open Season: Peter Thoits attended the ecoMaine Eco-Excellence Awards program with Mark Collins who was selected as the Gray Recycler of the Year. Peter will contact adjoining towns to see if they are interested in participating in a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event this year.
