August 15, 2006

Memorial Service for Jon Barton:
In observance of the funeral of the Town’s Fire Chief, the Town Offices will be closed from 10:30am to 1:30pm on Wed., Aug 16.  A memorial service for Jon Barton will be held at 11am at the Gray Public Safety Building on Rt. 26.  Parking is available at the High School with a shuttle bus provided.  Our condolences are extended to the family, co-workers, and Jon’s many friends during this time.  He will be greatly missed.

Town Hall open during lunch:
Effective August 7th, the town hall doors will remain open during the lunch time.  While our goal is to provide excellent customer service, we would appreciate your patience during the lunch time, as our employees will be staggering their lunches in order to accommodate the citizens of this community.  We hope this change is beneficial and welcome any comments from the public as to how we might improve our services.

Library Director Hired:
I am pleased to report that Tracie Lammers has been promoted to the position of Library Director.  Tracie was hired two years ago as the Reference Librarian.  When Priscilla Payne retired, Tracie stepped into the position of acting Library Director.  Tracie has successfully demonstrated that she is qualified and fully capable to perform the responsibilities for the Director position.  I look forward to working with her over the next several years.

Odds Bodkin:
Nationally known storyteller Odds Bodkin is coming to Gray on Thursday, August 17th at Newbegin Gym at 7:00 p.m.  This free event is being offered through the Gray New Gloucester Community Adult Education Department.

Fall Clean up and Household Hazardous Waste Collection:
The Town of Gray will hold its annual “Fall Clean-up” event on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the 18th, 19th and 20th of August.  During this time residents (no commercial) can bring unwanted household items to the Transfer Station for disposal at no cost.  Household items include:  appliances (limit of 2 freon units) furniture, mattresses, tires (limit 4) carpeting, televisions, etc.   This does not include construction or demolition material, brush or leaves and grass.  A valid Town of Gray Transfer Station Permit is required.  The annual household hazardous waste collection will be held on Saturday, August 19th from 9-1PM at the Town’s Sand and Salt Building just before the Transfer Station. The Solid Waste Committee is working with the Town’s of New Gloucester, North Yarmouth and Pownal and the firm Environmental Projects Inc. who will collect the hazardous materials that day.

Respectfully,

Deborah Cabana
