Boat, Snowmobile & ATV Registrations

The Town of Gray processes boat, snowmobile and ATV registrations for Gray residents only.

BOATS:

All boat registrations expire December 31st of each year.

Please bring in your most recent boat registration for renewals.  To renew your boat registration, you will need to pay your boat excise tax (based on the length of the boat, horsepower of the motor and age of the boat), a state registration fee (based on the size of the motor) and a $1.00 agent fee.

Lake protection stickers are required by law if the boat will be used in freshwater.  The cost is $10 ($9, plus a $1 agent fee) for Maine residents and $20 for non-residents ($19, plus a $1 agent fee).  These stickers can be purchased at the Town Office or online through Inland Fisheries & Wildlife at http://www.maine.gov/ifw/wildlife/milfoil.htm

To register a boat purchased through a private sale for the first time, you will need to bring in a bill of sale (the bill of sale should include the sellers name and address, the buyers name and address, the serial #, a description of the boat (length, motor size and year) and the purchase price. A 5% Maine sales tax will be collected based on the purchase price on the bill of sale.

If you purchased a boat previously registered by a Maine resident, you will keep the same Maine registration numbers that are already on the boat.  If there is no serial # or the boat is homemade, a state issued serial # request will need to be completed.

To register a boat purchased through a Maine dealer for the first time, you will need to bring in the (green) Dealer’s Certificate showing sales tax paid at the time of purchase.  You will also need to know the length of the boat & the horsepower of the motor.

A temporary registration and sticker will be issued at the time of first registration. The State of Maine will then send a permanent Maine registration number and a set of registration stickers.
