Libby Brook Bridge to Close for Reconstruction Project

Bennett Road will serve as the detour

Gray—The Libby Brook Bridge located on Mayall Road in Gray will be closed to traffic on July 15th until September 15th.  Wyman and Simpson, Inc. of Richmond, Maine is the lead contractor and is undertaking the Libby Brook Bridge project as part of the Mayall Road Bridge replacement contract.  According to MaineDOT engineers, the existing bridge is in poor condition, which prompted authorities to post weight restrictions.  And due to the narrow width of the existing bridge it is being closed to safely accommodate construction work.  Closing the bridge will also allow contractors to complete the job more quickly.  The Turnpike Authority has worked with the Town of Gray and New Gloucester on the bridge closure strategy and the detour plan.

“In this case, closing the bridge is the safest and most efficient option, said Bruce Pelletier, Turnpike Authority Public Affairs Assistant.  “It allows the contractor to work faster and get out of the way sooner.  There is a reasonable alternative route available,” he said.

Daily traffic on the bridge is very light.  Motorist will utilize Route 100 to the Bennett Road as the detour around the project.  Travelers are being notified of the closure via fixed roadside signs.  Signs directing motorists to the detour are in place and will be uncovered on the 15th.
