In Recognition For: Distinguished Military Service

Royal Thaxter Frank was born in the town of Gray, Maine. May 6th, 1836. His family runs far back into the history of Maine. His grandfather. James Frank, was a Revolutionary soldier. His father. Alpheus Frank, was born on the old homestead at Gray, Maine, September 3rd, 1794, and resided there until his death, October 3rd. 1873. He was man of sterling integrity, highly respected. His mother, Naomi Stimson, of Gray, Maine, was of revolutionary stock.

He married Emma Knight, daughter of Daniel and Pamelia Knight of Brooklyn, NY on October 12, 1864.  His distinguished military service began when he was appointed cadet in the U.S. Military Academy in 1854 and continued through his retirement on October 18, 1899 after over forty years' service.  His many accomplishments were detailed after his 1908 death and published in the 1909 United States Military Academy Annual Report.

General Frank was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
