In Recognition For: Service to the Town of Gray

Samuel Perley (11 Aug 1742 - 28 Nov 1831) was put into the care of an uncle at an early age and was educated at the best schools, including Harvard College.  There he met and befriended John Adams (President) with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship.  Before coming to Gray he preached at several churches.  In Gray, he preached until 1791 when the Salem Presbytery was dissolved and then, for the remainder of his life, practiced medicine and law.  He was a Justice of Peace from 1804 to 1818 and was a delegate to the convention held in Boston in 1788 to ratify the Federal Consititution.
