In Recognition For: Service to the Town of Gray

Dawne Frances [Christie] Shisler (5 May 1940 - 14 Jun 1997) was the first Gray resident to be crowned as Miss Maine.  She graduated from Gould Academy in 1958.  In 1960, Dawne moved to Gray with her family, after her father was hired as the first superintendent of the Gray-New Gloucester school district.  She was crowned Miss Maine in 1961 and at the Miss America pageant, she was awarded a $1000 scholarship for Most Talented Musician for her piano rendition of “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 1."  Dawne graduated from Colby College in 1962; married William Shisler in November 1962; and earned a diploma in piano from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1963.  They settled in Massachusetts, where she was a church organist and piano teacher.
