In 1800, Bartlett Adams (1776-1828) arrived in Maine from Massachusetts and established the area’s first stone-cutting shop. He made marble hearthstones, mantelpieces, and door jambs, but his longer lasting - and more visible - impact can be found in the early cemeteries of southern Maine. His shop produced hundreds of slate and marble gravestones, a nice variety of which survive today in some of the cemeteries of Gray.
Ron Romano will present a history of Adams’ work, highlighting headstones found in local cemeteries. Light refreshments will be served.
