National Fire Prevention Week

October 4 - 10 is National Fire Prevention Week.  The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.  Larger homes may need more alarms.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is excited to share this important information so everyone better understands the life-saving value of home smoke alarms.  Visit NFPA's Smoke Alarm Central for more details.

Fire Prevention Week was established to observe the “Great Chicago Fire,” of 1871, which killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned in excess of 2,000 acres.  The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
