GRAY, Maine (April 19, 2016) – Gray residents may know that the town of Gray has a mandatory recycling policy to protect the environment and keep waste management costs down. But do you know why the town of Gray pays $70.50 per ton to have its trash processed, and where that trash goes for processing?

The town of Gray’s trash is processed at ecomaine’s waste-to-energy plant in Portland, where it is combusted into enough electricity to power up to 15,000 homes annually before it is converted into a stabilized ash that is suitable for landfill storage.

In celebration of Earth Day, ecomaine will be on-site at the Gray Transfer and Recycling Station on Saturday April 23 to coach residents on how to recycle right, and to show you how Gray’s trash is used to generate electricity with minimal impact to the environment.

“ecomaine and the town of Gray together are all about sustainably managing waste in accordance with the waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle, compost, energy recovery and, as a last resort, landfill,” said ecomaine board member and Gray Town Manager Deborah Cabana.

The town of Gray is one of 20 owner communities of the non-profit ecomaine. Among the solid waste and recycling services that ecomaine offers to its owner communities are education and outreach programs such as this Earth Day event, and the School Recycling Grants, of which Gray High School was a recipient in 2015.
