Scott Leighton Exhibit at Skyline Farms

Sunday Afternoons - 1 PM - 4 PM

Two new winter exhibits are on public display at the Skyline Farm Carriage and Sleigh Museum, 95 The Lane, North Yarmouth, every Sunday from 1-4 p.m. through March 29.

Artist: Scott Leighton (1847-1898) - a Gray Honor Roll member since January 2011 - is a special exhibit honoring a local equine artist by that name. Leighton grew up in Gray and became interested in horses at a young age. He painted many prominent horses of the day, barnyard and landscape scenes. Currier and Ives printed at least 30 different lithographs of his work. This exhibit, developed in conjunction with the Cumberland Historical Society, showcases vehicles depicted in Leighton's paintings, plus a history of his life.

Maine Street showcases horse-drawn vehicles that were routinely seen parked alongside Maine's main streets. Visitors will see assorted types of typical family sleighs that would have stopped at various shops, plus delivery/business sleighs that would have delivered goods to restock stores. Of particular note, author Rudyard Kipling's wicker Basket Sleigh is on display.
