Dunphe, Mildred C. Lowe (1872 - 1949)

In recognition for: Service to the Town of Gray

Mildred C. Lowe Dunphe (25 Nov 1872 - 21 Feb 1949) was the first female Town Clerk in the Town of Gray.  She moved to Gray while young with her parents, Augustus & Mary E. Lowe.

Mildred graduated from Pennell Institute in 1891 and married William H. Dunphe in 1893.  

William served as the Gray Town Clerk for 37 consecutive years and within days after his Christmas 1947 death, Mildred was appointed by the Selectmen to perform the duties of the Town Clerk until a Clerk was elected.  She was elected as Town Clerk in March 1948.  

Health reasons forced Mildred to resign in early February 1949 and she died two weeks later.  She is buried with her husband at the Gray Village Cemetery.
