GRAY COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY - SPECIAL INTERIM ANNOUNCEMENT

distribution day

The Gray Community Food Pantry is pleased to announce that we have received $1500 in round 1 and $5000 in round 2 of the GREATER PORTLAND COVID-19 COMMUNITY RELIEF FUND GRANT FROM UNITED WAY OF GREATER PORTLAND, for a total of $6,500.

The Gray Community Food Pantry serves clients in Gray, New Gloucester and surrounding communities.  We welcome everyone regardless of financial status or residency.  We have heard many stories about people losing jobs.  Four adults in one family all lost their jobs in the same week.  Some came crying to us because they didn't know how they would feed their children. We have seen a drastic increase of households requesting food, paper products, personal care items, and cleaning items since the pandemic hit our state.  The churches were a big source of our donations but they are all closed now  According to Donna, the Coordinator,  "Even though there have been many businesses and individuals coming forth with donations it has been a challenge to get food out to these households as we are now holding our distributions in the parking lot using CDC protocol.  This grant will allow us to purchase items needed in the coming months."  We have now had 4 parking lot distributions, 3 of which have been in the rain.  We are utilizing a core group of volunteers who have put in a great amount of labor to make this work. Our goal is to feed all those in need who come to us.

United Way GP volunteers made rapid funding decisions for organizations on the front lines such as ours, meeting emergency needs for those affected by the pandemic and we are extremely grateful to the UW volunteers for choosing our pantry.  Donations to United Way are still being solicited to help fund other agencies.

Attached are pictures from our parking lot distributions and a link to the United Way website. Please consider donating to the United Way.   www.unitedwaygp.org
