It's the Law!

Snow vs. Vehicles & Roads

As January and our deepest winter months approach, put safety first when dealing with snowfall.  And remember, keeping our roadways safe by clearing snow properly is the law.

Maine Statute 29-A Chapter 19 Subchapter 1 prohibits driving with obstructed windows:

A person may not operate a vehicle with a sign, poster, opaque or semitransparent material or substance on the front windshield, side wing or side or rear window that obstructs the operator's clear view of the way or an intersecting way.

While you are cleaning, be sure to clear the roof and hood of snow or ice to prevent damage to those following behind you on the roadways.

Maine Statute 29-A Chapter 21 Subchapter 2 prohibits placing substances in a public way:

A person may not place and allow to remain on a public way snow or slush that has not accumulated there naturally.

This means that you cannot plow snow from your driveway or yard onto or across a public way.  Pushing snow to the side of the roadway and leaving it there is likewise prohibited. Driveway plowing should start from the roadway, with snow plowed to a designated spot on your property.
