When do I need a building permit?

A building permit is required when you are doing anything “structural” to a building, or adding a “structure” to a property.  Examples of projects requiring a building permit include:

• Adding, removing, or moving walls regardless of whether or not they are load-bearing walls
• Installing new doors or windows if the frame/header is being replaced/exchanged
• Replacing stairs
• Replacing or adding a deck
• Adding a storage shed or outbuilding to the property (regardless of size)
