Libby Nelson, Florence (1862-1932)

Florence was born in Gray April 23, 1862, a daughter of Hiram P. Hunt and Harriett N. "Hattie" Tucker. She married George W. Hunt in Portland on 24 June 1903; George died 6 November 1907. She later married Charles Hanson Nelson on 16 March 1921, also in Portland.

According to the Gray Historical Society, as a young woman she did some work for the selectmen of Gray. When she discovered that they planned to destroy many of the town’s records she managed to copy the records by hand.  From that time forward she collected local history, folklore and genealogy. It is this collection that is part of the “History of Gray” written by George Hill.

Florence died on April 3, 1932 and is buried in Gray Cemetery.
