In Recognition For: Service to the Town of Gray

Leonora [Whitney] Sweetser (3 Aug 1866 - 29 Oct 1939) was born and raised in Gray.  She attended Gorham Normal School and worked as a teacher in Webbs Mills (Casco); North Yarmouth; and various Gray schools.  In March 1895, she married Willard B. Sweetser of North Yarmouth.  They settled in Gray Corner after their marriage to live close to her parents, who were in poor health.  Leonora ended her teaching career in 1899 to spend more time with her family.  They eventually had five children.  Leonora was an active member of the Gray Grange and the Festival Chorus. She also supported the women's suffrage movement.  She served on the school committee from 1921-1923.  On March 2, 1925 at the annual town meeting, Mrs. L.W. Sweetser was elected as a Selectman.  She was the first woman chosen as a Selectman in Gray's history and she held this position for three years.
