The Greater Portland Council of Governments (GPCOG), an entity that provides regional leadership for many Maine towns in the Portland area, is looking for your help in eliminating pedestrian and bicyclists' injuries and deaths from cars.

Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by changing the way we design our roads and systems to ensure safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all.

If you live, work, or frequently travel through Bridgton, Casco, Chebeague Island, Durham, Frye Island, Gray, Harrison, Long Island, Naples, New Gloucester, Pownal, or Sebago, GPCOG wants to hear from you. Take their survey to let them know how you thinks streets could be safer, use their interactive map to share your concerns, and attend workshops to share your experiences in person.

In 2022, 177 people died in traffic crashes in Maine, the highest number of deaths since 2007. The primary goal of Vision Zero is to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries, which means saving lives and reducing the number of families impacted by the tragic loss of a loved one.

GPCOG is collaborating closely with an advisory panel of stakeholders, including local municipalities, the Maine Department of Transportation, local and state police, fire and EMS services, and public health departments. This collaboration helps ensure GPCOG thoroughly understands the issues and their real-world impacts.
