Gravestones
The difference between an uncleaned (L) and cleaned (R) gravestone.

The Gray Cemetery Association (GCA) hopes to build a core group of volunteers to clean gravestones at the Gray Village Cemetery.

The group will meet at 10 a.m. on the second Wednesday of the month beginning on May 8th, with a plan to go through fall. Initial meetings will include instruction on the tools, equipment, and methods for safe and gentle removal of dirt, grime, and other materials.

Participants need only bring willing hands, comfortable clothing, and sunscreen. The GCA will supply all tools and equipment. The GCA is limited to ten volunteers, so advance signup is required to participate.

To register to volunteer or ask questions about this project, email Gray Cemetery Association Trustee Becky Lee.

Documented direct descendants of any people buried in the Gray Village Cemetery who do not want their ancestor’s stone cleaned by this group should email GCA Trustee Debi Curry before May 8.

More than 5,000 people are buried at the Gray Village Cemetery, which is located at 1 Main Street in Gray. The cemetery was opened in 1784.
