Gray Waste Site Formally Removed From EPA’s Superfund List

The removal marks a major milestone in the full remediation of the site.

Following a proposed delisting of the former McKin Company Superfund Site located in Gray from the National Priorities List (NPL), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has now formally removed the site from the NPL.

Deleting a site from the NPL signals to communities that remedial activities on the Site are complete, and allows them to move forward in reusing and/or redeveloping the land as appropriate - although some restrictions remain.

The Agency and the Town of Gray have implemented institutional controls to maintain the site’s continued remediation, including an ordinance, adopted in 2002, prohibiting the use of groundwater within a designated area surrounding the site. There are also restrictions on 21 sub-dividable properties within the designated area. The EPA will also assess the site every five years, as it has done since 1992, to ensure remediation efforts remain effective. You can read those reports here.

The seven-acre site located at 25 Mayall Road started as a liquid waste disposal facility in 1965. Between 1965 and 1978, the site hosted various facilities, including an incinerator, a concrete block building, an asphalt-lined lagoon, and storage and fuel tanks.

Cleanup of the site began in 1979 with emergency removal of waste, oils, and chemicals. Long-term cleanup actions started in 1986 and continued until the site was deleted from the NPL. The site was added to the NPL on September 8, 1983.

The EPA welcomed public input on the proposed deletion from March to May 2022. Two comments were submitted and addressed by the agency. You can read the agency’s March 2022 final closeout report on the former McKin site here.

All site-related materials can be found on the EPA’s website.
