In Recognition For: Instrumental in formation of Gray Rescue in 1969

Kenneth Russell was born to Richard Russell & Clara Horne on February 25, 1913 in New Bedford, Massachusetts.  He moved to Gray in 1937, practicing medicine in Gray for 45 years, and serving as Gray's school physician as well as operating his own private practice from his home on Greenleaf Street.

Dr. Russell was instrumental in organizing the Gray Rescue unit in 1969, and serving on the unit as an officer and medical advisor.

OBITUARY - GRAY - Dr. Kenneth Russell, 69, died Saturday in a Portland hospital.  

Born in New Bedford, Mass., he was the son of Richard and Clara Horne Russell.  He graduated from New Bedford High School and from Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery. He moved here in 1937 from Jonesport.  He practiced medicine here for 45 years.

Mr. Russell served as Gray's school physician for more than 30 years and was instrumental in organizing the Gray Rescue Unit. He was active in Boy Scouting and other civic organizations.  He was appointed by former Gov. and Sen. Edmund Muskie as the state's first osteopathic medical examiner and held that position for many years.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of New Bedford, a member of the K. of P. here, a charter member and past president of the gray Kiwanis Club, and was past master of the Cumberland Lodge. He was a 47-year member of the Maine Osteopathic Association, and has served as its president and treasurer.  He was a staff member of the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine and had served as the hospital's chairman and treasurer.

Mr. Russell is survivied by his wife, Lillian O'Bryan Russell; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Nelson of Plainfield, Vt., and Mrs. Dorothy MacVane of Scarborough; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Moore of South Westport, Mass., Mrs. Hazel Weil of Brookline, Mass., and Mrs. Clara Mills of Gretna, La.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2pm Tuesday at the Gray Congregational Church.  Interment will be in the Gray Village Cemetery.
